This year, get your kids to read a book! Building strong readers is so important. As parents, we constantly worry about whether or not our children are learning what they should when they should. That’s why we always encourage them to read more. This new year, let’s take it to the next level. Encourage them with reading resolutions!

Take These New Year’s Reading Resolutions

There are so many resolutions we can make with our children! With these activities and goals, we can make reading a positive and enjoyable experience. This year, you could make a resolution with your child to:

  • Read all the books by their favorite author
  • Read a book with a friend once a month
  • Swap a reading book with their best friend
  • Read books from a movie
  • Read a book that was made into a movie
  • Share their favorite book with their neighbor
  • Read books to their pet dog or cat
  • Read a book with a character different from them
  • Make their own illustrations for their favorite book
  • Read a book with a girl as the main character
  • Read a book about science
  • Start a monthly book club with school friends
  • Read a book at the park on a picnic
  • Read summertime books at the beach
  • Write their own short story
  • Read books in the backyard
  • Read a book that won a Newbery Award
  • Write their own ending to a book they didn’t like

Make Reading Resolutions Fun

One of the big reasons why some children hate reading is because they find it difficult. Since they lack confidence and practice, they stay away from books and reading in general. However, we know that books and stories are absolutely wonderful! We enter worlds we have never known before and befriend characters we would otherwise never meet.

The most important thing we can do is give our children plenty of opportunities to practice reading and making sure that these opportunities are fun! This encourages them to continue practicing reading even if it’s harder than they like.
